How would you describe your practice?

Figurative, working with the alchemy of paint and water.

How has being selected for SHOWCASE supported your practice?

SHOWCASE’s specific brief to develop new work, encouraged me to engage with and develop an idea that I have been thinking about for some time; taking that idea into production has been very exciting.

What is your earliest memory of art?

In my first class at infant school, my friend Anne Bowtell, taught me how to draw necks on people. I’ve never looked back.

Which artists have influenced your work?

Emile Nolde, Marlene Dumas, Luc Tuymans, Christian Boltanski, Renaissance portraiture, Holbein and Goya.

Who is your favourite living artist? And favourite artist from the past?

Frank Auerbach, Francisco Goya

What is your favourite piece of art?

Piero della Francesca’s Nativity, 1483.

What is the most important lesson your have learned about art/being an artist?

I am still learning all the time.. try to keep some sense of joy in your practice.

What piece of advice would you give to a new artist?

Find someone whose artistic integrity chimes with your own and meet them regularly to discuss your work, your plans and for goal setting.
